POLYCHORDS

Image
Polychords are everywhere in music – all kinds of music. And yet polychords are often not fully understood, or even worse, are viewed as “scary” and “difficult,” leaving students to dismiss them as too advanced for their own understanding. Well, polychords are not too scary, difficult, or advanced. In fact, they are sometimes used to make advanced chords easier to understand and play Polychords: How To Define Them Let’s break this down into “ poly”-“chords .” We know what “chords” are, of course. Chords are two or more notes played simultaneously. Major and minor triads are some of the first chords we learn at the piano. “Poly” simply means “more than one” – as in, “two or more.” So a polychord is simply a single chord that incorporates two different chords. Polychords: Examples Let’s first review slash chords before we look at some polychord examples. Slash chords are very closely related to polychords . Remember that slash chords are written using a slash, with a chord ind

How to Sing Falsetto

Image
How to Sing Falsetto Falsetto is an often misunderstood term. It's widely confused with "head voice" in men and some don't think women have it all (though it's likely they do).  It lies toward the top of your vocal range and is generally light and airy compared to your other "voices." Finding your falsetto......... Do sirens from the top of your register. The falsetto "register" (though it's more of a muscle placement than a register) lies at the top of your range. It's a different type of voice that can be found by experimenting with high-pitched sirens – that's when you mimic a siren on an "ooh" sound just like a fire engine or a police car. Do them from the top of your register; not to the top of your register. Start as high as can – that should be your falsetto. It doesn't matter if it sounds good, it just has to be a legitimate note. Go into your little boy voice. Many voice teachers tell their male

How to practice music and memorize music

Image
How to practice music and memorize music  There's a single key ingredient in elevating your musicianship: the amount of time you spend playing well. Sounds utterly simplistic, but it's true. And to play really well-to find your best mastery over a piece-some memorization is usually required. So it follows, to play your best, you'll need to explore music memorization, directly experience its many benefits, and regularly use memorization to foster deep accomplishments and technical achievements. I encourage you to give memorization a solid try under good guidance. If you like the results you may find yourself motivated to use those memory/memorization techniques on a regular basis, and continue looking for "practice tools" that help you honestly and quickly improve. The opposing view Many teachers view memorization and the use of music notation as polar opposites, and those who teach primarily through notation often discourage memorization, as if there

Voice Tips

Image
1. Drink water. If you think drinking water is only good for physical fitness, newsflash: it's great for vocal health, too. Load up on the H20 to keep your vocal folds hydrated, healthy, and ready to go. Avoid any liquids at extreme temperatures. Anything too cold and your vocal folds will tense up; too hot and they may get irritated. If you are experiencing a tickle, warm teas or warm water with honey is fine. If you drink milk every morning, drink water after that, as dairy products coat your throat. As always, avoid alcohol. It dehydrates you and your voice. 2. Breath down low. Most people have a nasty habit of sucking their stomachs in and breathing just with the tops of their lungs. In order to get a strong, healthy singing voice, you must utilize the rest of your lungs and diaphragm, breathing low and deep. This is true whether you're sitting, standing, or lying down. While standing or sitting, place a hand on your stomach and force it out with every inhale

Happy Sunday Everyone, welcome to a new week. Evans forged a wholly original and completely personal approach to Jazz piano. Evans once said: ".... (music) should enrich the soul; it should teach spirituality by showing a person a portion of himself that he would not discover otherwise. It's easy to rediscover part of yourself, but through art you can be shown part of yourself you never knew existed. That's the real mission of art. The artist has to find something within himself that's universal and which he can put into terms that are communicable to other people. The magic of it is that art can communicate to a person without his realizing it... enrichment, that's the function of music " - #BILL_EVANS

Three Kinds of Music

Image
Three Kinds of Music You will find as you go to the Scriptures that there are three kinds of music. The strongest emphasis in the Scriptures is on sacred, worshipful music. A second kind of music is mentioned from time to time-music that is entertaining in nature, to lift your mood, perhaps to work by. And there is a third kind of music mentioned from time to time-degenerate music. Certainly, if you notice what is around you in the world, there seems today to be more degenerate music in our culture by far than there ever has been. Then again, there have always been “bar songs” and other entertainments that were sarcastic and derogatory toward other people, values and ideas. Why is this important? Whether we know it or not, the music we listen to affects the way we think. It affects our attitude. It affects our view of life. It affects how we relate to other people. Music has a power that goes far beyond noise. It is not just noise with a tune-it is a lot more than that. Con

Unlock your voice

Image
How can someone Find His or her singing range? 3 tips to unlock your voice 1. Find your vocal range  This is the measure of octaves you can sing, from the lowest to the highest. You can find your range by singing scales, starting with the lowest note you can clearly sing and continuing until you aren't able to hit a higher note. There are 7 main voice types: soprano, mezzo-Soprano, alto, countertenor, tenor, baritone, and bass. Warm up by singing major scales starting with the middle C. Sing C-D-E-F-G-F-E-D-C and move up or down one half step for each new scale. Which scales can you sing most clearly? At what point does it become difficult to hit the notes? Take note of where you fall to determine what your voice type is. 2. Find your tessitura Your tessitura is the range at which you are the most comfortable, and at which your voice sounds the most pleasant. [3] Your vocal range might exceed your tessitura. You might be able to hit very high or very low notes, but

Making Your Voice Sound Better, Instantly

Image
Making Your Voice Sound Better, Instantly 1. The “Instant Vocal Fix” This is a quick trick that makes you sound better instantly. Say A-E-I-O-U (watch your jaw movement in the mirror). Did your jaw close on any of the vowels? Chances are your jaw closed on the E and the U – and most likely on others too, if not all of them. Take your first two fingers and pull your jaw down 2 inches (or even better – use a plastic bottle cap or a cork (wine) to prop your jaw open). And speak the vowels again. And repeat again (we’re trying to re-program muscle memory – so the more the better). Now sing the vowels on one pitch. A-E-I-O-U. Your goal is to keep your jaw open (long not wide) without closing for all of your vowels. Repeat until you can do it. Now sing a phrase of one of your songs – and make sure your jaw opens to the same position on all of your vowels. You have to practice this a bunch before it becomes natural – but the more you do, the sooner this new movement is programmed into

Biblically; What you do when you sing.

Image
One of my very favorite musician "Travis Greene" a man after God's heart. Can you ask yourself the question of "what you do when you sing" here are some answers below. 1. When you sing, you obey. Singing isn’t an option in Scripture. It’s a command. Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Ephesians 5:18-19: “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart…” God’s people are more than just invited to sing – we are commanded to sing. When we sing, we’re doing what God asks of us! 2. When you sing, you dig deep roots in the Word. “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly…singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…” Colossians 3:16 The

Great Learners

Image
7 qualities of achieving success as a music student  1. Great learners see learning as pleasurable. Develop your passion through intensive learning that involves focused concentration and a sense of challenge. Recognize that “failure is a huge part of the enterprise.” 2. Great learners have learned that effort is more important than inborn ability. Kids with disabilities sometimes can deal with these through their other abilities and through persistence. In Olson’s words, “Thinking of yourself as an entity always ripe for development is a mark of learners who go boldly forward.” 3. Great learners tend to have a strengths-based view of themselves and others. “This attitude,” says Olson, “is at the heart of learning resilience.” Figuring out what you excel at and practicing being satisfied with these traits can help you learn. 4. Great learners practice letting go of negative emotions, of flipping the script on what might be regarded as a failure. Let failure go—don’t brood on

How to avoid a Hoarse Voice.

Image
What Is Hoarse Voice? Many people have a hoarse voice in nature but many have it as the change in their voice. The hoarse voice consists of the changes in pitch and volume that can range from a weak and raspy voice to deep and harsh voice. What Causes A Hoarse Voice? A hoarse voice is caused by many causes. In general, the condition is caused by the injury to or irritation of the vocal cords. In fact, the larynx, also known as the voice box, is belonged to the respiratory tract that contains the vocal cords. The vocal cords are 2 bands of muscle forming a “V” shape inside the larynx and when you speak or sing, the vocal cords vibrate and create sound.    When hoarse, the voice may sound breathy, raspy, strained, or there may be changes in volume (loudness) or pitch (how high or low the voice is). How are vocal disorders treated? The treatment of hoarseness depends on the cause. Most hoarseness can be treated by simply resting the voice or modifying how it is used. Avoidance

Posture Exercises

Image
Good morning everyone, today's discussion is on Posture Exercises. Any imbalance in body posture can adversely affect the way in which the larynx and vocal folds function to produce voice. This is because poor posture anywhere in the body can lead to excess tension and lack of flexibility in the muscles of breathing and voice. The following are some tips for achieving effective body alignment for voice production ¶ head with your spine (ears over shoulders) • Keep posture symmetrical • Balance your weight evenly when standing • Keep arms relaxed • Keep the shoulders level and relaxed and in a slightly forward-sloping position • Keep knee joints loose and legs relaxed • Keep the feet directed forward and approximately 20 cm apart where possible • Keep the rib cage relaxed and lifted • Keep the shoulders relaxed and lowered Good posture is the first step to making your body work for you because it provides alignment that maximises lung capacity and releases tens

Breathing Exercises

Image
Breathing exercises To focus on the lower part of the body for breathing: Lie on your back on the floor with your knees up and your neck supported by a cushion. Put your hands on your lower abdomen and breathe in deeply but easily and feel your lower ribs and abdomen move out against your hands as you breathe in. Make sure that you breathe in easily so that your abdomen relaxes to expand; do not push your stomach out! As you breath out, let the air from your lungs out slowly and gently and feel your ribs and abdomen move back down to their resting position. Breathe in and out gently and quietly in this way for one minute. Stay lying on your back breathing in this way, but now breathe in for a count of two and then hold as “s” sound for as long as possible as you breath out. Keep the sound steady and don’t let it die away or get louder. Time the duration of the sound as you breathe out (just count to yourself) and aim for 15-20 seconds. Keep your hands on your abdomen so th
